Minnesota Sings is a competition between cities throughout our great state–designed for amateur singers.  Vocalists compete for the honor of representing their city and for the opportunity to win some wonderful prizes.  There are two divisions:  13 to 20-year-olds and 21 and older.  Vocalists have to sing to a backing track that cannot exceed five minutes.  The song has to be memorized and the words need to be family-friendly.  The best part is you can sing any type of music.  At Minnesota Sings we hear everything from Broadway to Rock N’ Roll, Country, Country Rock, Jazz, Swing, Blues, Contemporary Christian, Arias from Operas, and much more.

Cities have to put on a local “Sings” event to determine who will represent them at Minnesota Sings.  Each city can send four singers to Minnesota Sings–two from each division.  $20,000 total in cash will be given away and also recording sessions and music gear at the state competition. Local prizes are provided by sponsoring businesses.

ELIGIBILITY

Youth Division contestants must be at least 13 but no older than 20 years of age ON October 1, 2022. (Contestants must not be younger than 13 or older than 20 on that date, regardless of their age when they qualified at the city level for that division).  Contestants 21 and older will compete in the 21 & older division.

This is an amateur competition, so if more than 25% of your 2021 income came from singing, then we consider you to be a professional and not eligible to compete.
Only individual contestants are eligible, sorry no multiple singers or additional instruments may be used.

NOTE: Once a contestant has won First Place at Minnesota Sings, he/she is not eligible to compete again.

So, a new First Place winner is chosen every year.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Judging at the Minnesota Sings Finals will be conducted by a combination of performers, instructors, and members of the music industry. We have provided a sample of the judges scoring sheet.  City Judges’ Score Sheet

These are the same criteria that should be used at each city sings competition.

Vocalists will be judged based on the criteria listed below and will receive the judge’s brief comments immediately following their performance. All judges’ decisions are final.  (There will be no comments during the Final Round).

1. Vocal Skills: Includes pitch, breath control, dynamics, phrasing, enunciation, and tone.

2. Presentation Skills:  Includes eye contact, body expression, facial expression, attire, and microphone technique.

3. Audience Response to Performance: Based on the judge’s observation

4. Choice of Material: Singer chooses a proper song to showcase their abilities

5. Judge’s Overall Impression of your Performance: At the discretion of judges

JUDGES POLICY

For the finals of Minnesota Sings we require all Judges to reside OUTSIDE of Minnesota.  However, for the local Sings events that is not the case. Our judges are carefully selected to assure the most equitable judging team possible. Historically, our judges have represented wide range of backgrounds and experience ranging from Broadway, choral direction, world opera stage, and nationally touring music groups.
